Offset smoker (classic Texas-style smoker): the smoke travels continuously from the firebox, through the cooking chamber, to the chimney.
Reverse-flow smoker (classic Texas-style smoker): the smoke path is not continuous but reversed—traveling from the firebox through the chamber and back—with the firebox and chimney located on the same side.
Box Pit / Box Smoker: the smoke travels vertically, moving from the bottom upwards.

For the painted version—which features a heat-resistant black finish—it is recommended to burn it in before the first use.
The seasoned version does not require this. However, it is advisable to oil and then burn in the seasoned surface once a year; the frequency may depend on the storage location and method, as well as the local climate.
